Wellness and Nutrition

This module provides an overview of the importance of wellness and nutrition as students learn about choosing health care providers, medications, physical examinations, and creating a practical wellness plan.

The Wellness and Nutrition module is designed according to the AES course framework, which includes four phases:

  1. Explore
  2. Learn & Practice
  3. Reflect
  4. Reinforce

Below you'll discover how AES can help you teach your students about wellness and nutrition according to these four phases.


Phase 1: Explore

Activity: Wellness Role-play and Discussion

In this activity, students use a role-play activity and class discussion to explore healthy and unhealthy factors that affect a patient's overall health.


Phase 2: Learn & Practice

Unit 1: Wellness

In this unit, students will learn about: wellness as they identify areas of holistic health, list alternative therapies, give examples of how wellness affects health care systems, and identify factors of healthy living.

Unit 2: Nutrition

In this unit, students will learn about: types of nutrients and the parts of MyPlate as they name the six food groups, find the amount of food they need from each one, and list types of therapeutic diets.

Unit 3: Health Care

In this unit, students will learn about: how people choose health care providers, differences between prescription and over-the-counter medications and brand name and generic medications, procedures of a physical examination, and the procedure for testing far vision.

Unit 4: Stress and Planning for Wellness

In this unit, students will learn about: effective ways to manage stress as they create a wellness plan.

Phase 3: Reflect

Activity: Reflection Questions and Discussion

In this activity, students will journal about holistic health, therapeutic and regular diets, and stress-reducing techniques. A class discussion can follow.


Phase 4: Reinforce

Activity: Wellness Campaign

In this activity, students work in groups to create a wellness campaign. The campaign will include a persuasive poster, a short speech and a short class activity all trying to promote the group's specific wellness related topic.

 

Activity: Stress Reduction

In this activity, students work in pairs trying several stress reduction techniques. Afterwards they decide which technique they like best.

 

Activity: Create a Board Game

In this activity students work in a group to create a board game that demonstrates the results of making good and bad on the players' health and wellness.

 

Activity: Public Service Reminder

In this activity students review an alternative medicine topic and develop a public service announcement to inform consumers or health professionals.

 

Activity: Current Event

Students will review articles for information related to a topic in the module. Once an article is found, students complete a Current Event form.
