How to Determine the Version of Microsoft Office On Your Device
Follow these steps on your students’ device to locate the version of Office they have access to:
- Start a Microsoft Office application (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)
- Click the File tab in the Ribbon
- Then click Account
- On the right side, you’ll see the version of Office
Once you identify the version of Office installed on the device, it’s time to discover whether it’s compatible with the Business&ITCenter21 lessons you plan to assign.
What Versions of Office are Compatible with iCEV?
Use this chart to quickly identify which versions are compatible with the Business&ITCenter21 curriculum, and continue reading below for more information on compatibility:
Compatibility for Business&ITCenter21 Lessons that Require Microsoft Office*
*Modules listed N/A are not available for the associated version of Office within the iCEV Business&ITCenter21 curriculum.
Compatibility for Microsoft Office 2013
Microsoft Office 2013 is a non-subscription version of the installed Office software. Microsoft released the software in 2013 and has not made any non-maintenance updates to it since.
If your students have Microsoft Office 2013 installed on their computers, it will be compatible with the Microsoft Office 2013 lessons within Business&ITCenter21.
Note: The modules available for Microsoft Office 2013 are in “maintenance mode.” That means the only changes will be to correct errors, and iCEV will not add new content to the Microsoft Office 2013 lessons.
Compatibility for Microsoft Office 2016
Microsoft Office 2016 is a non-subscription version of the installed Office software. Microsoft released the software in 2016 and has not made any non-maintenance updates to it since.
This version of Office will be compatible with the Microsoft Office 2016 lessons within Business&ITCenter21.
Compatibility for Microsoft Office 2019
Microsoft Office 2019 is a non-subscription version of the installed Office software released in 2019.
If your students have Office 2019 installed, it will be compatible with the Microsoft Office 2019 lessons.
Compatibility for Microsoft Office 365
Microsoft Office 365 is a subscription version for the installed software. Microsoft releases regular updates to this version, which means it can change at any time. This subscription is available for both the mobile app and desktop app versions.
If your students have the desktop version of Office 365, it will be compatible with the Microsoft Office 365 lessons.
However, the mobile app versions of Microsoft Office 365 for iPads, iPhones, and Chromebooks are not compatible with the iCEV Microsoft Office curriculum. See the section on Compatibility for Office Online to learn more.

Compatibility for Office Online
Office Online is the online web browser version of the Microsoft applications.
If your students have Office Online, they won’t be able to complete the iCEV computer applications lessons for teaching Microsoft Office.
The only modules requiring Microsoft Office compatible with Office Online are:
- Accounting
- International Business
- Job Seeking Skills
- Marketing Project
If you need to teach Microsoft Office and your students only have Office Online, Business&ITCenter21 from iCEV is not a good fit for your computer classes.
Compatibility for Microsoft Office Mobile Applications
The mobile application is the Office version for smartphones and tablets.
If your students only have tablets, Business&ITCenter21 from iCEV is not a good fit for your classes because students can’t complete assignments requiring Microsoft Office on that type of device.
Compatibility for Office for Macs
Microsoft has Mac versions available for 2016, 2019, and 365. These Mac versions are very similar to the Windows versions; however, there are a few differences.
As a result, some students may struggle to make the connection between the PC-based instructions within iCEV lessons and what they see in their Mac version of Office.
Because of this, we do not recommend using the iCEV computer applications modules on Apple laptops or desktops.
