In our newest blog series, Ed Tech Tools, we will be sharing innovative, online resources for CTE teachers to use with their iCEV lessons. The first resource on our docket is Flipgrid. In this article we highlight tips for using Flipgrid and some ways to incorporate Flipgrid in your iCEV lessons.
Flipgrid is a free video discussion tool to help you meet the needs of all of your students. Along with providing a secure space for students to demonstrate mastery of learning, Flipgrid provides a platform embodying the 6 C's of 21st Century Education.
What Can You Do With Flipgrid?
Flipgrid allows teachers to post discussion for students to respond. Discussion can be questions, video directions, short clips or teaching and learning resources from iCEV. Students are able to show their understanding of the content using a short social media like response with filters, emojis and stickers.
A few ways to incorporate Flipgrid with your next iCEV lesson are included below.
• Allow students to complete the bell ringer virtually.
• Pose a question at the end of the lesson to gather students' thoughts.
• Ask students to restate the lesson vocabulary in their own words
• Give students 90 seconds to recap what they learned for the day.
We have developed a few FlipGrid lessons for you to use in your CTE classrooms.
• Allow students to complete the bell ringer virtually. iCEV Cybersecurity Bell Ringer allows students to activate their prior knowledge about cybersecurity. Students can spend time reflecting on what they know before the lesson begins.
• Pose a question at the end of the lesson to gather students' thoughts. Cybersecurity Careers allows students to research cybersecurity careers and share their findings with their peers.
• Ask students to restate the lesson vocabulary in their own words with iCEV Cybersecurity Vocabulary. Using their vocabulary handout, students will select 3 terms to restate in their own words. Once finished, allow students to leave feedback for their peers on Flipgrid.
• Give students 90 seconds to recap what they learned for the day. Try the Flipgrid topic iCEV 90 Second Brain Dump: Cybersecurity with your students. At the end of your iCEV Introduction to Cybersecurity lesson, give students time to do a true brain dump sharing what they have learned.
Getting started with Flipgrid is an easy three step process. iCEV users can use Flipgrid to make their classrooms more collaborative and engaging.
1. Create a Topic
Topics are the discussion prompts used to begin the conversation. Think of this as the space you will include everything students need in order to show you what they know. Things such as video clips, website links, discussion questions and direction can be included.
2. Share the Discussion
Flipgrid takes great care to ensure students are protected, and there are a few options to give students access to the conversation. Students are able to use their email addresses or you can create usernames for each participant. There are also several ways to share the Topic with students. You can simply click a button to send it directly to classroom collaboration spaces, including Remind, Google Classroom or Microsoft Teams, or you can share the Join Code with them. Don’t worry. Only your students will be able to access the Topic based on the predetermined access method you select.
3. Have Students Respond
This is where the fun begins. Once students access the discussion space, they are able to record their response and add personality and flair using the interactive tools Flipgrid provides. Students can use filters, add text, record their screens and add emojis to their answers.
Do you need inspiration? Flipgrid has a resource library filled with thousands of sample Topics and lesson examples. In the Discovery Library, you can search for a Topic by subject, community or Topic.
