Emergency Care

This module provides an overview of emergency care as students learn to assess emergency situations and react appropriately to bone and joint injuries, shock, open wounds, severe burns, foreign bodies, poisoning, heart attacks, strokes, diabetic reactions, seizures, convulsions, and heat and cold related illnesses.

13 Emergency Care

The Emergency Care module is designed according to the AES course framework, which includes four phases:

Below you'll discover how AES can help you teach your students about emergency care according to these four phases.

Phase 1: Explore

Activity: Lab Equipment

In this activity, students will demonstrate the proper use and care of equipment used in emergency care such as: crutches, sterile gauze pad, roller gauze, elastic bandage and triangular bandage.

Phase 2: Learn & Practice

Unit 1: Introduction to Emergency Care

In this unit, students will learn about: the principles of emergency care, the roles of first aid providers in handling them, and legal issues such as the Good Samaritan Acts and scope of practice.

Unit 2: Injury Care Techniques

In this unit, students will learn about: techniques for injury care including dressings and bandages, slings and splints, and crutches and crutch gaits.

Unit 3: Shock and Bone/Joint Injuries

In this unit, students will learn about: causes, symptoms and treatment of shock and the symptoms and proper care of bone and joint injuries such as fractures, dislocations, sprains, and strains.

Unit 4: Wounds and Burns

In this unit, students will learn about: wounds and burns as they differentiate between closed and open wounds and first-degree, second-degree, and third-degree burns and learn to treat wounds and burns.

Unit 5: Foreign Bodies and Poison

In this unit, students will learn about: types of and treatment for foreign bodies and signs and symptoms of poisoning and how to contact the Poison Control Center and treat a poisoning victim.

Unit 6: Extreme Temperatures

In this unit, students will learn about: the dangers of exposure to extreme temperature, including heat cramps, heat exhaustion, heat stroke, hypothermia and frostbite. They will learn how to provide care in various heat and cold exposure situations.

Unit 7: Sudden Illnesses

In this unit, students will learn about: sudden illnesses, including heart attack, stroke, fainting, diabetes, and seizures. They will learn signs, symptoms, and how to react to patients experiencing a sudden illness.

Phase 3: Reflect

Activity: Reflection Questions and Discussion

In this activity, students will journal about legal parameters relating to the administration of emergency care, first aid and emergency care, and the appropriate actions in emergency situations. A class discussion can follow.

Phase 4: Reinforce

Activity: Emergency Scenarios

In this activity, students will work in groups to respond to an emergency situation that requires first aid and/or CPR. They will also record actions taken in these situations.

Activity: Current Event

Students will review articles for information related to a topic in the module. Once an article is found, students complete a Current Event form.
