1 Health Care SystemsThe Healthcare Systems curriculum module provides an overview of the history of healthcare, healthcare delivery systems, trends and technology, and healthcare economics including health insurance plans and government programs.

Phase 1: Explore

Activity: Analyze Healthcare Facilities

In this activity, students work in pairs to list facilities that employ healthcare workers. As a class, the students then discuss additional components of these facilities such as, services offered and who is served.


Phase 2: Learn & Practice

Unit 1: History of Healthcare

In this unit, students will learn about: medical contributions of cultures throughout history, from Ancient Times through the Modern Era as they compare the beliefs regarding medicine, see the effect of the Black Death on medical development, identify achievements of Hippocrates, Rhazes, and Lister, and learn how technology has improved medical treatment..

Unit 2: Healthcare Delivery Systems

In this unit, students will learn about: systems theory and components as they relate to healthcare systems, identify and compare national healthcare systems, and analyze multiple delivery systems with similar components. They will recognize roles of government and nonprofit agencies, importance of organizational structure and line of authority, and the value of interdependence.

Unit 3: Trends, Technology, and Emerging Issues

In this unit, students will learn about: healthcare trends and their impacts, cost containment, consumer responsibilities, new technologies and emerging issues, and the importance of lifelong learning as a healthcare provider.

Unit 4: Healthcare Economics

In this unit, students will learn about: health insurance, characteristics of managed care and indemnity insurance, compare healthcare costs based on insurance plans, and explore Medicaid and Medicare.

Phase 3: Reflect

Activity: Reflection Questions and Discussion

In this activity, students will journal about the history of medicine and healthcare, systems theory, components of a healthcare delivery system, and government and non-profit healthcare agencies. A class discussion can follow.


Phase 4: Reinforce

Activity: Write a Goal Using Systems Theory

In this activity, students will use the systems theory to write a goal for one system in their life.

Activity: Talk Show

In this activity, students research a historical healthcare figure and write a brief report on the individual. Students will then think of questions that a talk show host might ask the historical figure. The students then role-play a talk show using the questions and research on the historical healthcare figure.

Activity: Health Care Innovations Debate

In this activity, students will investigate current health innovations, develop pros and cons to the issue, and host a debate on their findings.

Activity: Comparison Infograph

In this activity, students will identify defining features of healthcare systems in the US and compare them with those of other countries.

Activity: Payment Methods

In this activity, students will differentiate among the methods of payment for healthcare in the US.

Activity: Current Event

Students will review articles for information related to a topic in the module. Once an article is found, students complete a Current Event form.
