This module gives students an overview of the role and responsibilities of medical office occupations. Topics include: educational requirements, professionalism, personal appearance, teamwork, effective communication, HIPAA, and the legal issues that pertain to office personnel.

Unit: Communication Game

Description
In this activity, students will learn about: effective feedback through a communication game. After the game, the teacher can lead a class discussion about the importance of feedback in the healthcare setting.

In this unit, students will learn about: medical office assistant legal responsibilities and how they relate to medical records, the need for and purpose of HIPAA, and the HIPAA Privacy Rule.

Description
In this unit, students will learn about: communication between healthcare workers by observing a scenario with alternate endings and then answering questions.

Description
In this activity, students will journal about making a good first impression with patients, the role of interdependence in a medical facility and the pros and cons of HIPAA. A class discussion can follow.

Unit: Personal/Professional Qualities Skit

Description
In this activity, students will write and perform two skits demonstrating undesirable and desirable professional and personal qualities for a medical office assistant.

Unit: Current Event

Description
Students will review articles for information related to a topic in the module. Once an article is found, students complete a Current Event form.
