Safety Precautions

This module provides an overview of safety techniques and the steps for greeting and identifying patients in a health care facility. Students use the Internet to research safety regulations from OSHA, the FDA, and the EPA and demonstrate how to report safety violations by filing an event report.

The Safety Precautions module is designed according to the AES course framework, which includes four phases:

  1. Explore
  2. Learn & Practice
  3. Reflect
  4. Reinforce

Below you'll discover how AES can help you teach your students about safety techniques and regulations according to these four phases.


Phase 1: Explore

Activity: Greet, Identify, & Explain a Procedure

In this activity, students role-play to recognize the appropriate way to greet, identify and explain a procedure to a patient to help the patient feel safe and comfortable.


Phase 2: Learn & Practice

Unit 1: Safety Guidelines and Regulations

In this unit, students will learn about: helping patients feel secure by respecting their privacy, identifying them by name, and explaining procedures. They will explore government agencies, research regulations related to health care, and follow procedure to report a safety violation.

Unit 2: Body Mechanics

In this unit, students will learn about: body mechanics and why it is important in health care careers as they identify how to apply correct body mechanics for themselves and for patients.

Unit 3: Environmental Safety

In this unit, students will learn about: providing a safe environment by practicing food, fire, and chemical safety as they recognize ways to avoid foodborne illness, construct an evacuation plan, and understand material safety data sheets.

Phase 3: Reflect

Activity: Reflection Questions and Discussion

In this activity, students will journal about the results of using good and bad body mechanics, ergonomically correct and incorrect items in the classroom, identify common fire hazards and how to correct them, and why government standards are important. A class discussion can follow.


Phase 4: Reinforce

Activity: Create an Evacuation Plan

In this activity, students should use the Fourth Floor Evacuation Plan Worksheet to create an evacuation plan based on the guidelines learned in the Fire Safety lesson.

 

Activity: Safety Guidelines Poster

In this activity, students can work individually or in pairs developing a safety guideline poster. The students must research safety guidelines for a specific topic before creating the poster.

 

Activity: Current Event

Students will review articles for information related to a topic in the module. Once an article is found, students complete a Current Event form.
